Sorry for the downtime. Turns out it was quite a funny story though.

When I saw that our Nintendo article was pictured on N4G (see screenshot below) I knew we would be getting a lot more traffic. Therefore in my infinite wisdom I decided that it would be a good time to tinker with some of the website’s settings. Unfortunately this resulted in any link on the website coming up with either a ‘Internal Server Error’ or a ‘Not found’ error, meaning no one could read any of the posts. Excellent.

I then spent 3 hours in live support chats with my website host. I was getting somewhere towards resolving the issue in the first chat, but cleverly I clicked the disconnect from chat button.

The second chat was a bit more successful, he managed to fix the problem enough that I could access the backend of the blog (ie. the admin section). Unfortunately, after an hour my browser froze. Yay!

By this time it was 1am, but I forced myself to head into yet another support chat. This time I was told what the problem was - either all my files had been deleted or some weird file was interacting with another file incorrectly. Either way I didn’t know how to fix it, and nether did the support guy. I was just about to leave and contact wordpress, when I noticed something.

I had taken a screen shot earlier, just before I had changed the settings. When the second support person got the admin section back up and running, I thought I had reverted the settings to how they were previously. However, upon closer inspection I realised that I had made a tiny tiny error. I changed the error and the blog was fixed. Woo!

I really shouldn’t be a webmaster.

Thanks to all the support people who helped me out though. They all had to deal with my worries and convoluted explanations and I salute them for that. Thanks guys!

What were you trying to do and were you able to do it eventually?
